Richard “Dick” Fischer is a former member of the School Transportation News Editorial Advisory Board. He drove his first school bus in 1952 in the U.S. Air Force. After four years of service, he started driving school buses for Orange Unified School District in Southern California. At 23, he became a school bus director for Centralia School District and La Puente high school District did that for 11 years. He helped form the California Association of School Transportation Officials. Started School Bus Safety Week with a letter-writing campaign to President Richard Nixon in 1969. 1970 he was hired at ARA Transportation as the corporate vice president for safety and training for a fleet of 5,500 buses in 11 states. 1972 testified at the United States Congress regarding school bus standard 17. And In 1977 he started his own world-wide school bus safety and training consultant company, Trans-Consult.
Received the National Safety Council Distinguished Service Safety Award, 1996. National Association of Pupil Transportation Distinguished Service Award, 2004. National Association of Pupil Transportation Inducted into the Hall of Fame 2007. Kansas State Pupil Transportation Association Lifetime Achievement Award 2010. School Transportation News Lifetime Achievement Award 2024
