Nicole Portee is a highly accomplished operations leader with a distinguished career in public school transportation, facilities management, and operational strategy. As Associate Superintendent of Operations for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS)—the largest school transportation system in North Carolina, serving 141,000 students—she provides executive leadership for Transportation Services, Facilities Real Estate and Planning, School Nutrition Services, and Inventory Warehouse, while also supporting CMS Police Department and Building Maintenance.
Mrs. Portee has been instrumental in launching Electric Buses, advancing sustainability efforts, and implementing CMS Express Stops, an innovative solution designed to improve efficiency and address staffing challenges. Prior to CMS, she served as Senior Executive Director of Operations at Guilford County Schools (NC) where she led efforts to implement new routing software, enhance students with disabilities transportation data and Executive Director of Transportation for Denver Public Schools (CO), where she led the award-winning Success Express shuttle system and earned the Gold Peak Award for New Product or Service Launch.
A leader in school transportation innovative services and change management, Mrs. Portee played a key role in Denver’s Regional Transportation District pass program evaluation and served on the City of Denver 2017 GO Bond Stakeholder Committee, shaping investment in school infrastructure.
Her operational impact includes:
Optimizing transportation operations with Georgia Institute of Technology, reducing bus usage by 8%, repositioning miles by 20%, and eliminating 34 routes amid national driver shortages.
Co-leading the successful approval of a $2.5 billion bond referendum to fund 30 new, renovation and design of schools and leading Charlotte-Mecklenburgs Facility Conditions Assessment for long-range capital planning.
Committed to innovation, collaboration, and student-focused excellence, Mrs. Portee holds degrees from American Intercontinental University and Colorado State University and continues to drive forward-thinking solutions in school operations.
